Nacirema Lesson Plans

Background:

"The Body ritual Among the Nacirema," is a satirical anthropological. It uses language to distance the reader from what seems like a bizarre, primitave tribe.

Main Points:

1. We often take our own culture for granted, and we are blind to many of its rituals and habits.

2. We see our own culture as the standard, and everything else becomes "other."

3. Culture is complex. We should be skeptical of knowing or judging another culture based on one source.

4. We can avoid assumptions by looking for connections betweeen cultures, consulting multiple sources and points of view, and recognizing bias always exists.

Purpose:

Historians use strategies to read non-fiction texts. Two of those strategies are to highlight and annotate what they read.

Golden Rule:

1. Circle the words you do not know

2. Underline Important details.

3. Highlight sparingly

4. Annotate
